Climate Footprint: Everything you need to know

Understanding what a climate footprint is can be hard, so we’ve made it easy.

Strong Roots is proud to be a certified B Corp. This means that we've met B Corp's standards of performance, transparency, and accountability. We were one of the first Irish companies to certify as a B Corp, and we remain committed to balancing purpose and profit. The B Corp certification covers a wide range of impact areas, assessing our Company as a whole. These include our community engagement, worker experience, governance, consumer protections, and environmental impact.

One of the impact areas assessed by B Corp on the environmental side related to our climate footprint. Climate footprints show the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted in association with a person or company’s activities, like the ones created in the process of getting our products into your hands. While many people call this measurement a ‘carbon footprint’, carbon is only one of the most prevalent gases in food production. Therefore, we call it our ‘climate footprint’.

The majority of humanity’s greenhouses gases come from fossil fuel combustion, but the food we eat is still responsible for almost one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Our climate footprint is a combination of greenhouse gases like:

Carbon Dioxide CO2

Nitrogen Oxide N02

Methane CH4

Carbon dioxide accounts for three-quarters of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, however, so we convert the other gases’ effects into a CO2 equivalent number to make measuring it easier.
